FeNO | Airway Inflammation Testing

A test which measures the amount of Nitric Oxide in expelled air, an indication of airway inflammation.

Why you might need an FeNO test

FeNo is useful in determining if your current management plan is working properly and how your medicines may need to be increased or reduced. It can also be used to identify what type of asthma you have and can track your airway inflammation over time. A FeNO test may also be used to rule out other conditions that have symptoms similar to asthma.

What to expect

A FeNO test starts with spirometry and can take up to 20 minutes to complete. It requires you to blow into a mouthpiece approximately 6 times during spirometry and once through the FeNO device.

You will be seated upright in a comfortable position, the technician will explain the procedure in total and will also give you verbal and/or visual cues during the test so you will not have to remember the whole procedure start to finish.

A nose clip will be placed on your nose and you will be instructed to start the breathing manoeuvre . Three successful trials are required for repeatability. You may also be required to perform the same test following inhaling a bronchodilator such as Ventolin or Bricanyl.

After spirometry the technician will guide you through the FeNO test. Unlike spirometry the FeNO test requires you to exhale steady and controlled instead of forcefully.

Following the FeNO test our Specialist Physician will explain the results to you in detail.
