Nasoendoscopy
An examination in which the consultant physician uses a thin flexible telescope to visually inspect your nasal passageway and upper airway.
Why you might need a nasoendoscopy
At SomaHealth Sleep & Respiratory, we perform nasoendoscopy to help diagnose nasal and sinus infection or inflammation, it can also be a preliminary examination for detecting sleep disorders by inspecting the upper airway.
What to expect
Nearly all nasoendoscopy procedures are done without any side-effects or complications, you will be given a nasal local anaesthetic spray to minimise any discomfort and the effects usually disappear within an hour.
You will be asked to sit upright or lay in a semi-propped position in the consultation room. The local anaesthetic usually starts working within a few minutes. The endoscope is then gently inserted into one of your nostrils and the flexible arm allows it to conform through the nasal cavity quite easily.
A camera at the tip of the endoscope sends live video to the screen on which the physician can observe any abnormalities throughout the nose or upper airway. During the test you may be asked to perform several movements. These may include puffing out your cheeks, talking or poking out your tongue. These movements help the doctor to make a proper assessment of abnormalities or screen for any possible obstructive airflow occurrences.
The results of the procedure will be discussed with you by the doctor during the consultation.
